Redefine Grief

Grief is the result of conflicting feelings caused by the end of or change in a familiar pattern of behavior.

~ The Grief Recovery Institute

Whoa! This Definition Changes Everything ...

We usually associate grief with death but that is only one of the 40+ losses that cause conflicting emotions. Even positive events can cause tremendous conflict when we think how much life has or will be changing.

My grief was punctuated by marriage, divorce, widowhood, caregiving and other losses both positive and negative from childhood on. By stuffing it down, I accumulated 50 years of loss into one very unhappy package!  Of course I hid that fact.

I wasn't even aware how it limited my joy and affected my professional life.

I know. I've tried. Grief is emotional not intellectual. I was trapped by Myths that kept me stuck. No one ever taught or modeled an emotionally safe and effective way to handle negative bad feelings.

The Grief Recovery Method is Different ...

You Can't Fix a Broken Heart with Your Mind ...

Therapy helped me to make decision and deal with the day to day drudge. It wasn't enough.  A support group gave me tips to get by but mostly I felt like I was on a treadmill of everybody else's sad stories.  It wasn't enough.

By accident I stumbled on The Grief Recovery Method®.  In 10 short weeks, I unraveled 50 years of being stuck! It was more than enough. I began to enjoy life!

That's why I became a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist®.

~ Virginia M.

"I'm not afraid to be in my head anymore."

~ Katherine P.

We won't tell you, “We know how you feel,” because we don’t - neither does anyone else!

We will provide a safe environment and guidance to help you recover from a lifetime of accumulated loss. Recovery is achieved by a series of small and correct choices made. We guide you to make those choices and take action.

"You were my lifesaver! You moved me past a lifetime of issues—to see through the anger."

 ~ Mark P.

"As one who has done extensive personal therapy, this helped me come to a place of more peace."

~ Patty G.

We do not group by type of loss, our belief is that puts the focus on the story instead of recovery.

Recovery actions help ...

  • Escape the trappings of Myths that keep you stuck
  • Discover your unique recovery components that are the source of your pain
  • Complete what is emotionally unfinished in your relationships
  • Gain life skills that improve current and future relationships

... so you can embrace fond memories without them spiraling into pain.

All Grief Recovery Method® programs are lead by a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist® trained by The Grief Recovery Institute. We meet weekly for 2 hours.  These are not drop-in groups, enrollment is open through the second week.

Losses Are Not Grief! They Are Events.

"Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced."   ~ James Baldwin

Although grief is normal and natural, most of the information we hear or have been taught is not normal or natural. The result is a negative accumulation of unresolved grief. Over a lifetime, the grief from many events is snarled and tangled together making it difficult to unravel.

Many therapy programs and discussion support groups do little to unravel the compounding issues that keep us stuck.

Although it is never too soon to begin recovery from loss, a hallmark of The Grief Recovery Method® is it's ability to resolve grief that remains painful for decades.

This 10 week group or 8 week one-on-one  program will help.

Grief is normal and natural. Wanting to protect our children’s feelings is also normal and natural.

But here’s the thing. The best way to protect them is to teach and model effective ways to emotionally deal with inevitable loss and grief.

Whether you are a parent, teacher, or otherwise involved, you know that sinking feeling when questions are asked about sad or painful feelings. Often we are left struggling for the right words because we don't know what to say or do.

This 8 week group or 6 week one-on-one program will teach you how to confidently connect and communicate with the children in your care about losses they have experienced and those they might yet face.

"Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them."   ~ James Baldwin

“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened. ”

~ Anatole France

Although we do no group by type of loss, we have found pet grievers reluctant to seek help for fear of  their pain being minimized.  If this is your concern then this program is for you.

The core principles are followed but tailored specific to pet loss.

This 7 week group or 6 week one-on-one program will help.
